Traverse City, Michigan, is known for its stunning views of Lake Michigan, rolling vineyards, and vibrant downtown filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. For anyone visiting, it’s a must-see destination that combines small-town charm with big-city flavors. One perfect way to immerse yourself in Traverse City’s food scene is by experiencing two of its culinary gems: Mama Lu’s for lunch and The Flying Noodle – Italian Pasta House for dinner. Both restaurants, each unique in their offerings, are sister establishments that serve up incredible food with a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Traverse City: A Lakeside Treasure
Before diving into the delicious meals, it’s worth highlighting Traverse City itself. Known for its pristine waterfront, picturesque vineyards, and charming downtown, this small city in Northern Michigan is a favorite destination for travelers seeking natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and fantastic food. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll along the beach, visiting the historic Cherry Republic, or exploring the local art galleries, Traverse City has something for everyone. And for food lovers, the city’s thriving restaurant scene is truly the cherry on top.
Lunch at Mama Lu’s: Tacos, Street Corn, and Fries
We kicked off our culinary adventure with lunch at Mama Lu’s, a casual yet vibrant restaurant located in the heart of downtown Traverse City. Specializing in Mexican street food with a modern twist, Mama Lu’s is a local favorite known for its bold flavors and fresh ingredients. The laid-back vibe, colorful decor, and lively energy make it the perfect spot for a casual lunch.
The stars of the menu? The tacos, street corn, and fries.
- Tacos: At Mama Lu’s, the tacos are nothing short of exceptional. Each taco is crafted with care, featuring perfectly seasoned fillings and fresh toppings. Whether you’re craving classic carnitas, spicy chorizo, or crispy fish, there’s a taco to suit every taste. The balance of flavors in each bite is spot-on, with tangy salsas, creamy sauces, and fresh cilantro coming together in perfect harmony.
- Street Corn: The street corn, grilled to perfection and coated in a creamy sauce with a sprinkle of cheese and chili powder, is a must-try side dish. The smoky, sweet flavors paired with the tangy sauce make this dish the ideal companion to the tacos, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite.
- Fries: Yes, fries! While fries may not be the first thing you think of at a taco joint, Mama Lu’s fries are a game-changer. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they’re seasoned with just the right amount of salt and spice. They’re the perfect snack to munch on between tacos or share with the table.
After a flavorful and filling lunch at Mama Lu’s, we spent the afternoon exploring Traverse City, walking along the picturesque waterfront, and soaking in the small-town charm. But the culinary adventure wasn’t over yet—next up was dinner at
The Flying Noodle – Italian Pasta House.
Dinner at The Flying Noodle: A Pasta Lover’s Dream
By the time dinner rolled around, we were ready to dive into something hearty and comforting, and The Flying Noodle – Italian Pasta House delivered in every way. Known for its fresh, handmade pasta and authentic Italian flavors, The Flying Noodle has become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.
The restaurant has a cozy, rustic vibe that feels both inviting and elegant. The friendly staff, open kitchen, and tantalizing aroma of freshly cooked pasta create an atmosphere where you can relax and truly savor each bite.
Carbonara with Fried Chicken Mushrooms: The Star of the Night
One dish that stole the show at dinner was the Carbonara with Mushrooms Fried Chicken. This pasta dish is a perfect blend of creamy, savory, and earthy flavors that will have you craving more with every bite. The fresh pasta is tossed in a silky carbonara sauce, made even richer with the addition of sautéed mushrooms. The mushrooms add a layer of umami that elevates the dish to another level, while the crispy pancetta and cracked black pepper provide the perfect counterbalance to the richness of the sauce.
Every forkful was a dream, with the creamy sauce clinging to the pasta and the flavors coming together in perfect harmony. For anyone who loves pasta, this dish is a must-try at The Flying Noodle.
Lemoncello with a Kick: The Perfect After-Dinner Sip
To complement the richness of the Carbonara, we couldn’t resist trying the Lemoncello. This traditional Italian liqueur is light, zesty, and the perfect palate cleanser after a hearty meal. Served ice-cold, the Lemoncello offered a bright, citrusy finish that left us feeling refreshed and ready for dessert.
Dessert at Milk + Honey: Ice Cream on a Waffle Cone
No day of eating in Traverse City would be complete without a sweet finish, and for that, we headed to Milk + Honey for some of the best ice cream in town. Located just a short walk from The Flying Noodle, Milk + Honey is known for its artisanal ice cream made with fresh, local ingredients.
We opted for ice cream served in one of their signature waffle cones—crispy, golden, and made fresh daily. With flavors ranging from classics like vanilla and chocolate to more adventurous options like honey lavender and salted caramel, Milk + Honey offers something for everyone.
The waffle cone was the perfect vessel for the rich, creamy scoops, and strolling through downtown Traverse City with an ice cream in hand was the perfect way to end a day filled with incredible food.
I opted for Butter Pecan on a Waffle Cone – it was terrific.
Final Thoughts: A Perfect Culinary Day in Traverse City
From the bold flavors at Mama Lu’s to the comforting pasta at The Flying Noodle, our day of dining in Traverse City was nothing short of spectacular. Whether you’re enjoying tacos and street corn for lunch or indulging in rich pasta and Lemoncello for dinner, Traverse City offers a diverse food scene that will leave you satisfied and eager for more.
If you find yourself in Traverse City, make sure to stop by both Mama Lu’s and The Flying Noodle—you won’t regret it. And don’t forget to save room for dessert at Milk + Honey! It’s the perfect way to cap off a delicious day in one of Michigan’s most charming cities.
