Mistake 1: Inconsistent Routine

In the past, I was guilty of trying out various skincare products without committing to a consistent routine. I would switch between products frequently, hoping for immediate results. However, this inconsistency only led to confusion and lackluster skin. I would literally do skincare roulette, and my skin never got the full benefit of a product, and I swapped them often. Now I stick to a certain group of products.

Solution:

I learned that consistency is the key to achieving effective results. I crafted a simple and tailored skincare routine suitable for my skin type and concerns. By sticking to this routine religiously, I started noticing gradual improvements in my skin’s texture and appearance. Patience truly pays off when it comes to skincare.

Mistake 2: Skipping Sunscreen

During my teenage years, I underestimated the importance of sunscreen. I would occasionally skip applying it, assuming that I didn’t need protection on cloudy days or when staying indoors.

Solution:

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in any skincare routine. I now apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, regardless of the weather or my plans for the day. This simple habit has not only prevented further sun damage but has also helped fade dark spots and even out my skin tone over time. For ease of use I use a block style where it is less messy and easier to carry.

Mistake 3: Over-Exfoliating

In my pursuit of smooth and radiant skin, I fell into the trap of over-exfoliating. I used harsh scrubs and strong chemical exfoliants too frequently, which led to redness, irritation, and compromised skin barrier.

Solution:

I’ve learned that less is more when it comes to exfoliation. Now, I exfoliate only 2-3 times a week, using gentle exfoliants with mild ingredients like lactic acid or enzyme-based products. This allows my skin to renew itself without causing irritation, promoting a healthier complexion. I started using Rice Polish from Tatcha daily now to help clear out the skin better too. Now I wash my skin 2-3 times with gentle methods like the above to make sure my skin is ready to accept the products I will place on top.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Hydration

I used to believe that my oily skin didn’t need extra hydration. As a result, I neglected moisturizing and relied solely on oil-free products, leading to dehydrated and dull-looking skin. My skin became dry in some spots and super oily in others, combination skin.

Solution:

I’ve come to understand that hydration is essential for all skin types, including oily skin. I now use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. This has balanced my skin’s moisture levels, leaving it plump and radiant without exacerbating oiliness. The more hydrated I kept my skin, to less I started to starve my skin of moisture.

Mistake 5: Not Removing Makeup Properly

After a long day, I used to be tempted to skip proper makeup removal and opt for quick fixes like makeup wipes. This left my skin feeling unclean and caused breakouts over time. The pores ended up never truly clean, and I ended up just piling on the gunk deeper inside, leading to bigger pores, oil and breakouts

Solution:

I’ve realized the importance of thorough makeup removal and double cleansing. I start by using a gentle cleansing oil to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, followed by a water-based cleanser to ensure a clean slate for my skincare products. This step has significantly reduced breakouts and improved the overall clarity of my skin.
