Our journey to Lost River Gorge was one of excitement and discovery. We knew there would be walking, but we were excited to see the boulder caves and stunning scenery we had heard so much about. This post will walk you through what to expect on your own family trip, from the breathtaking sights to the practical details of navigating the trail.

What is Lost River Gorge?
Lost River Gorge is a naturally formed gorge in Kinsman Notch, created by the immense power of melting glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. As the ice sheet receded, meltwater and massive boulders carved a deep, narrow chasm through the granite. The river that flows through it often disappears beneath the jumble of giant rocks, earning it the name “Lost River.”

Today, a 1-mile wooden boardwalk trail guides visitors through the gorge. This path leads you up, down, and around the stunning rock formations, offering incredible views of the river, waterfalls, and the surrounding forest. Along the way, you have the option to explore eleven different boulder caves, each with its own unique character and challenge.

An Unforgettable Walk Through Nature

The main attraction is the boardwalk trail itself. It’s an impressive feat of engineering that allows you to experience the gorge safely while feeling completely immersed in nature. The trail follows the river, taking you past cascading waterfalls and pools of clear mountain water. The sound of the rushing river is a constant, soothing companion on your journey.
Be prepared for a workout. The trail involves a significant amount of walking and climbing stairs—over 1,000 of them, to be exact. While the path is well-maintained, it does go up and down continuously as it follows the contours of the gorge. This is part of what makes the experience so adventurous. You feel like a true explorer discovering a hidden world.
Fortunately, the designers of the trail understood that visitors would need breaks. There are numerous benches and lookout points along the way. These spots are perfect for catching your breath, having a sip of water, and simply soaking in the magnificent scenery.
Endless Photo Opportunities

One of the best parts of visiting Lost River Gorge with family is the abundance of photo opportunities. Every turn reveals a new, beautiful scene that you’ll want to capture. The interplay of light, water, rock, and forest creates a stunning backdrop for family photos.
Some of the best spots for pictures include:
- The Suspension Bridge: A gently swaying bridge offers a fantastic view of the gorge from above. It’s a great spot for a group photo.
- Paradise Falls: This beautiful waterfall is one of the first major sights you’ll encounter. The viewing platform is an ideal place to snap a picture with the falls in the background.
- Lookout Points: Several platforms extend out over the gorge, providing panoramic views of the river and surrounding mountains. These are perfect for capturing the scale of the landscape.
- Cave Entrances: The rugged entrances to the boulder caves make for dramatic and adventurous-looking photos. Capture the kids’ excited faces as they decide whether to venture inside.
Taking photos not only documents your trip but also provides a natural way to pause and appreciate your surroundings. These breaks make the journey more manageable for little legs and give everyone a chance to rest before continuing.
Exploring the Boulder Caves

For many, the highlight of the trip is exploring the boulder caves. These are not deep, dark caverns but rather spaces formed by massive boulders that fell into the gorge thousands of years ago. Each cave is different, with names like “The Lemon Squeezer,” “The Bear Crawl,” and “Judgment Hall of Pluto.” For added peace of mind, you’ll find first aid kits stationed at each cave entrance, ensuring quick access to basic medical supplies if needed.
Exploring the caves is optional. A bypass route on the main boardwalk is available at each cave entrance for those who are claustrophobic, prefer not to crawl, or are carrying a child in a pack. This makes the experience inclusive for the whole family. Younger children and adventurous adults will love scrambling through the narrow passages and emerging on the other side.
It’s a good idea to set expectations with your kids beforehand. Some caves are tight and require crawling on your hands and knees. The “Lemon Squeezer” is famously narrow, but conquering it is a badge of honor for many visitors!
A Rewarding Experience for the Whole Family
Visiting Lost River Gorge is more than just a walk in the woods; it’s a shared accomplishment. The physical effort required makes the stunning views and the fun of cave exploration even more rewarding. You work together as a family, encouraging each other up the stairs and celebrating as you emerge from each cave.
The experience fosters a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. It’s a hands-on geology lesson and a fantastic physical activity rolled into one. By the end of the trail, you’ll likely be tired, but you’ll also be filled with a sense of achievement and a collection of wonderful new memories with your loved ones. The smiles on your family’s faces will be a testament to a day well spent.

Happy Exploring, Everyone!
